Replacing a Leaking Roof

A leaking roof can cause damage to your house and its structure. Fortunately, there are many ways to find and fix the problem. Broken shingles, clogged gutters, and chimney damage are all common causes of leaks. Ignoring these problems can cost you a lot of money in the long run.

One way to spot a leaking roof is to look for a pool of water. If you find a pool of water, place a bucket underneath the area. Then, use a sharp object to puncture the center of the bulge. If this doesn’t work, a leaky roof might need to be replaced altogether.

To replace a leaking roof, you must remove the shingles and wood sheathing. Once the wood is exposed, you can install new wood shakes. Galvanized nails can be used to secure the new wood shakes. Afterwards, use roof sealant to seal gaps less than 1/4 inch.

If you’re not comfortable doing this yourself, get some help. Try to isolate the areas that are leaking. You can use a garden hose to do this. The sides and downhill side of the chimney should be soaked first, and the top of the chimney should be soaked last. If you can hear a drip, then you’ve found the culprit.

In addition to caulk and nails, check for cracked vent boots. Cracked vent boots can allow water to leak into your home along the pipe. In addition, cracked vent boots may not be sealing well, so you should replace them with a new one. If you find any nails that are missing or deteriorated, replace them with rubber washer screws.

A leaking roof may also be a sign that the flashing on the roof is not functioning properly. If the flashing is damaged, you should remove the old flashing and replace it. This should prevent further damage. If the shingles are damaged, you may have to replace them as well. Make sure to remove any old caulk in the overlapping corners and check for leaks. If you know nothing about roofing, you’ll want an Orlando roofing service that has a good reputation for doing a good job.
